Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Integrative, Functional, Regenerative, Personalized lifestyle, and conventional medicine?
Integrative/Functional Medicine identifies and treats the root causes of disease, recognizes the body’s innate ability to heal, and honors the patient/client as an equal partner in care. Regenerative Medicine focuses on age management and lifespan wellness using precision medical therapies. Personalized Lifestyle Medicine ties it all together.
Conventional medicine treats acute dysfunction/disease by managing symptoms or removing/repairing damaged tissue. Conventional medical providers may have hospital admitting privileges for acute conditions, whereas naturopathic physicians refer to a medical specialist or hospitalist if higher level care is required. Conventional physicians are licensed to prescribe a broader range of pharmaceuticals, including benzodiazepines and opioids, but their training in diet/lifestyle is limited.
Naturopathic physicians are experts in diet/lifestyle/nutraceuticals/botanicals/counseling in addition to pharmacology. Some conventional physicians are specialty trained as surgeons, whereas naturopathic physicians are limited to minor office surgery/procedures. Both can serve as primary care providers, many serve only as specialty care providers.
Can/do Naturopathic Physicians Prescribe Drugs?
Yes. Certain health conditions benefit from pharmacologic intervention. A Naturopathic Doctor (ND) is licensed by the state(s) of practice to prescribe all legend drugs (such as hormone replacement therapy, anti-hypertensives, and antibiotics) and some controlled substances such as testosterone or codeine solutions with additional DEA certification.
Can you be my primary care provider?
This is a specialty care practice providing functional and regenerative medical services for age, hormone, and stress management. We are happy to make referrals and collaborate with both primary care and other specialty care providers. We encourage you to have basic labs ordered and run through your primary care provider using conventional health insurance. Please bring current lab results to your visit or upload to your Vital Mind Body/ChARM electronic health record for established clients. We order both basic and comprehensive functional medicine labs, diagnostic testing, and integrative treatments; these are typically out of pocket but may be reimbursed by insurance, health savings account (HSA), or flexible spending account (FSA) funds. Check with your insurance plan for specifics.
Do You Accept Insurance?
An insurance reimbursement form (superbill) is available for your convenience. Integrative/Functional/Regenerative medicine is out of network with insurance and may be considered as non-covered services. Fees are due at appointment booking with a 48-hour cancellation notice for full refund. We accept most credit cards, including health savings account (HSA) or flexible spending account (FSA) tax-advantaged credit cards. This allows for more personalized service, longer appointment times, and the greatest flexibility in treatment options aimed at optimal wellness. Contact your health insurance for specific coverage or deductible inclusions and reimbursement rates.
